part 1: choosing potential sites

results

Synthesis and Final Selection

Operations were performed on the four layers obtained in the methods page to give the potential sites. The intersect [Overlay > Intersect] of (1) Land Use and (2) Co-Location with Desalination Plant was first created. Then, (3) Height Restriction and (4) Buffer Distance from Residences were used to erase [Overlay > Erase] the intersect results. The map obtained after this step is shown below.

Thereafter, the possible areas (marked in purple in above map) were set at 50% transparency and viewed with a basemap available in ArcGIS. This helped us select sites on land areas which meet several other criteria. Areas with existing buildings built on them were first excluded (see example shown in Figure 1). Since the land area occupied by a plant of similar capacity is around 10 hectares, areas with too little land for the building of the plant were also excluded. In addition, since the land use plan is drawn up based on projected reclamation of land, possible areas which fall on land that has not been reclaimed yet (or newly reclaimed and thus has no basic infrastructure developed yet) were excluded as well (see example shown in Figure 2). This left us with two potential sites as shown in the maps below. Since these two possible sites are near existing incineration plants, we generalised the expected capacity of all plants in each region to one point for further analysis in Part 2.
